TDaP Vaccine: What You Need to Know

What is TDaP?

There are many vaccines that are recommended by Center for Disease control. One of those vaccines is the TDaP vaccines. TDaP is a single vaccine that protects our bodies from three illnesses: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

What Does it Protect Against?

This vaccine is effective in preventing the following illnesses and their symptoms:

  • Tetanus (T), commonly known as “lockjaw,” is the tightening of the jaw muscles, causing the inability to open one’s mouth. Bacterium found in dirt, dust or manaure causes this infection.
  • Diphtheria (D) is the result of strains of bacteria that cause the body to make a toxin. While the infections of the skin are possible, infections of the respiratory system are more common. Respiratory diphtheria can cause swelling of the glands of the neck
  • Pertussis (aP), or “whooping cough,” causes violent coughing fits, difficulty breathing and “whooping” sound as one tries to breath. Caused by a bacterium, pertussis is especially dangerous for babies.

TDaP: Who & When

This vaccine is for young children, adolescents and adults. Regardless of age, the CDC recommends everyone receive a vaccination.
